Let’s GoogleTalk

After a couple of months of rumours only about Google producing an IM tool, they have now released a beta version of it.

It’s called GoogleTalk, and can be downloaded for free right here. Watch out tho’, with it’s whopping size of 900kb it will eat all of your bandwidth. </sarcasm>

I’ve been testing it for only an hour and I love it.
It’s minimalistic design is cool, it seems to blend in with any kind of background or desktop theme. (Kaleidoscopic backgrounds excluded)
There’s a few other really nifty things about it. For example, if you’ve got a couple of open chat windows, you can dock them.
Well actually, you stack them.

The uppermost chat window then serves as the general window and the other ones below it are sort of “merged” to the upper window. You can then, via this leader-window, minimize all of the docked windows with one click, since it’s treated as one merged window.
If you close any window in the merged window, the one that’s directly docked below that window moves to the closed windows place and takes focus and restores itself if it was “barred”.
Yes, there’s also a “bar”-mode for each window, kind of like the “windowshade” mode of winamp if u like.
You can separately put every window in bar-mode, wether it’s docked to a main window or not.

Too bad there isn’t any _real_ logging available. I really think this should be a required feature for any IM tool. You do get to see the last conversation (up to a 20-some of lines) with your contact, but the rest of previous conversations is just gone. These convo’s are logged in “C:\Documents and Settings\xxx\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Google Talk\chatlogs” on WindowsXP and are in a format that’s not quite easy to read. Which also deserves some criticism in my opinion.

Aside from communicating with your friends by “chatting”, it’s also possible to communicate by means of a microphone, and actually “talk” to each other. This feature is mostly available in other IM tools, but the quality (if your apparature allows it) of the conversation is pretty damn good.
However, it’s not possible (yet) to talk to groups of people. I’m hoping they’re going to implement this feature, along with the logging, in the next (beta) version.
That’s kind of everything I’d love to see from the development team.

Another drawback is that you need to have a GMail-address if you want to be able to use this IM tool. That is, if you consider owning a GMail account a drawback :) . GoogleTalk supports open standards and you will be able to use other clients if they’re also supporting the XMPP protocol.

I’m still going to use MSN Messenger simultaneously, but I think I’ll be stepping over to GoogleTalk soon enough. I figure it’s just going to be like when I moved from ICQ to MSN.

We’ll wait and see. If you want to add me, you can do so by adding sch3lp at gmail dot com.
See you online.

Pieter & Jan’s Birthday Party

Last friday we celebrated both of my neighbours’ birthday in their garage.
I’ve put the pictures of the evening online. Most of them were taken by Sofie, and they look really nice.
Either click on the “Pics” link in the menu, or click here to visit the page directly.

Edit: It was friday, instead of saturday. Thanks Iceman for correcting me, and also for being part of the reason to make me make that mistake. Going out saturday was fun, but mind-numbing. :)

Alterac Valley: First impressions

Update:
Screens are up and can be found here.

Let’s talk about WoW, since I don’t seem to be able to keep my mouth shut about it anyway.
For the people that don’t know what World of Warcraft is: Get educated.

I only played the Alterac Valley battlegrounds seriously about 3 times up until now. My first time in there was like the time when u learn the flavor of Skittles, a whole new world is opening up for you. I mean, sure you’ve tasted candy before, but this was different. This time, you could actually _feel_ the charge, and _taste_ the rainbow. It’s the exact same thing with Alterac Valley. You’ve got the World, “Azeroth”, in World of Warcraft. And then there’s Alterac Valley. It plays so much different than your normal WoW gameplay, PvP included. Although it’s kind of hard to understand how everything works at first, you learn it pretty quickly when you know what the purpose of each team is.

Each team starts at their own base camp, Horde is positioned in the South, and Alliance in the North. The objective is to get to the other teams camp, and slay their Warchief. Along the way are certain points you can control to get a tactical advantage over the enemy. There are graveyards and towers to capture and destroy. Graveyards allow you to respawn when you’re dead. The closer to the enemy you can capture a graveyard, the easier it gets to keep on pressuring the enemy and driving them back to their camp until you can slay their warchief. There’s 1 graveyard in the middle: The SnowFall GraveYard. In my opinion the most important one to hold, because it’s situated on a mountain and only has 2 paths that lead there. It gives much leverage when you’re attacking the following enemy graveyard. Next to the SnowFall graveyard there are still 3 other enemy graveyards you can conquer. Each graveyard, when controlled by a faction, has guards (NPC’s) to protect them. These guards’ stats get stronger the longer the game lasts (like the OOE mod for Warcraft3). Taking over a graveyard works as follows: you right-click the banner and wait for the action to complete. Of course, this action can be interrupted by getting attacked, or moving, etc… After you have completed this action you have to hold the graveyard for a while until it becomes one of your own faction. The enemy forces get a message that one of their graveyards is under attack and they can reconquer the graveyard by right-clicking the banner and waiting until the action is complete.

Besides graveyards, there are also 4 bunkers and towers you can destroy. The concept of destroying one is much like the graveyard capturing, but a bunker has stronger and more npc’s to guard it. Along with 1 or more elite “Lieutenant” npc’s (lvl 60 elites) you need to pull or kill. Patrolling guard NPC’s won’t spawn when you destroy a Bunker/Tower, PLUS you get Bonus Honor for each bunker you destroy, so it’s a good thing to torch these things.

There are also quests you can do inside AV, some of them will help your faction to turn things around sometimes. For example for The Horde there’s two quests you can do to send out WolfRiders. One of them is to tame Frostwolves in the area and bring them to the quest NPC. Another quest that relates to this one is to kill Rams and harvest their skins to make armor for the WolfRiders. When enough wolves and armor have been brought back, the WolfRiders ride out and slay everything on their path. Now, these WolfRiders are like 20 or something (haven’t really counted them) lvl 60 elite guards, that ride the path starting from the Horde’s base to the Alliance’s base. Alliance has a similar quest to send out RamRiders. There’s also a quest to collect blood from the other faction’s npc’s and players so you can summon a Boss NPC that will fight for your faction. And yet another to send out Air attacks that will strike where the largest battle is going on at the moment.

Besides these faction-aiding quests, there are also a couple of other quests you can get outside AlteracValley. Such as “Capture a graveyard”, or “Capture a Mine”. Yes, there are also 2 mines you can capture and hold to gain minerals to support your troops. If you’ve got lower-levelled players in your group (with lower level being players that aren’t 60), you can get them to harvest wolves/skins or mine minerals or whatever, and have your lvl 60’s crush the opposing forces.

There is also one particularly interesting quest, to kill the raid boss “Korrak”. A troll that spawns at around 3h of battlegrounds playtime. I was stuck with Verdant Keeper’s Aim (quest reward from Maraudon) until I killed Korrak and got myself the crossbow BloodSeeker reward. The other rewards are pretty nice as well.

I haven’t been able to destroy the Alliance’s Warchief with my Horde buddies, but I’ve been damn close. I had been playing for over 2 hours (from the start), and we got them driven back to their base and needed to capture one graveyard (the one inside the Alliance’s camp). But after playing another hour without any result I quit, because things weren’t progressing anymore. Too bad because that was a pretty cool game. I saw all the faction-aid quest rewards in that one game: The WolfRiders, The WyvernRiders and Lokholar The IceLord.

As for how rewarding playing battlegrounds might be, let me tell you this: Last Week I still was a Grunt (about 25% til next rank) I got 1293 kills, 24442 Honor and my Standing was 436. That’s by only playing 2 battlegrounds, I totalled about 8hours battlegrounds playtime. And this week I gained one rank. But no entire bar. I’m a Sergeant with approximately 55% of the honor bar left until I reach next rank.

I’ll update soon with pictures of the Battle we almost won.

My overall first impression of Alterac Valley was that it was pretty amazing. And fun ! Man, I didn’t have so much fun since last time I played a _good_ game of Quake3 CTF about 5 years ago. It was incredible, and I hope this experience lasts and look forward to crushing the fucking Alliance.
FOR THE HORDE!

FruitFucker Cell!

Penny-Arcade got a new lasercell out at ThinkGeek.
After their first non-limited lasercell (the one with the yacht), they decided to produce a second one.
This one’s about one of my other favorite characters: The FruitFucker. FruitFucker Prime to be exact.
I think it’s too bad they decided to include the text-balloon in the picture though. It’s kind of holding me back to buy one.
That, plus the fact that I already bought the other cell
I think I’m going to wait for other cells and buy them all at once, because the shipping cost is like 25$ or something :/

Party @ BoB’s World

Johan, the guy from BoB’s World invited a bunch of friends over. There wasn’t anything to celebrate really, but it had been a while ago since the last party at his place.
He’s got a nice appartment in Leuven. Because of Marktrock taking place that day parking space was scarce and we had to park near the trainstation. It was about a 5 minute walk or something. Arriving at the appartment, I get a glass of wodka-orange handed to me. The other guys had been drinking already and they decided I should join in :) Needless to say I joined in, causing this small hangover I’m having this morning. I wonder how Cedric is doing though. I’ve made some pictures of the party, including one particular photo of Cedric, doing a thing he usually does not. Party Pictures

We also visited MarktRock for the “performance” of Janez Detd. But, they sucked, as I expected :) They even called their dead friend, to which they honored one of their songs, a “motherfucker”… ’nuff said? I think so.

It was a fun party, and I want to thank BoB for hosting it. So thanks Johan ;)

Consultants are the devil

I didn’t want to generalize, but I couldn’t find a different suiting title.
First let me say we have a lot of consultants at our company, either for SAP, Java or WebFOCUS. They’re all good sports generally, but in the past weeks I had the opportunity to work with a different kind of SAP consultant. I had to attend to other urgent problems for our EAI system, so I didn’t have a lot of time to waste. This consultant, let’s call him John, arrives at the company same time I arrive. Which is, by the way, pretty early -around 7- when you consider most people at our company start work at 8:30.First week went by kind of okay, I wasn’t sure what he was doing, but my colleague later informed me of his task.
Now what he does every morning, is come by my office and shake my hand. I do not consider this to be normal behaviour. I think it’s normal that you shake hands first time you meet and when you know you won’t see people anymore for a while. But right, John shaked my hand every single day. Asking how I was feeling today and stuff. The usual smalltalk. But, eventhough I gave huge hints to leave me alone, he persisted in smalltalking for like over an hour. Me, being my unassertive self, of course didn’t tell him to piss off, and instead only stressed myself more and more. I had a deadline and it wasn’t looking very optimistic…

That was one ‘great’ characteristic of the guy. Another top characteristic of our John was that he always talked like he knew everything about everything. Making compliments all the time. Being a HUGE asskisser in general really. I started to wonder why the hell he was doing this, and soon came to a conclusion: he was trying to get me to join the company he worked for. At least, that’s what I was thinking. Why else would he be so familiar? I only knew him for 2 days or something.

Later in the week he actually insinuated I join the company he works for, when he found out what my skills were. Convo went something like this:

John: “You know, the thing that interests me about SAP is that it’s such a grand platform. It’s got everything a company needs”
Me: “Yeh okay, but I don’t like to code ABAP at all. I have a strong java background, and ABAP doesn’t have anything to offer at all in comparison with java.”
John: “Yeah Java is also really cool, but I’m not ‘down’ with all that Objective Oriented Programming. You can use OO in SAP as well, but I think it’s hard to use.”
Me: “…ABAP just plain sucks.”
John: “We could use someone like you at our company you know. You get a good salary, company car, blabla bla bla blabla”

My assumptions were confirmed. He DID want me to join his company. OBviously I declined his offer. So that left me with a really awkward feeling. Are all consultants trying to do this? Are consultants that work here already doing this same thing, but maybe only less obviously than our good friend John?

My overall conclusion is that now I think consultants are the devil. And it’s all thanks to John. Way to go John.
